Large Demographic Shocks and Small Changes in the Marriage Market

چکیده
Large Demographic Shocks and Small Changes in the Marriage Market This paper provides non-parametric estimates of the total effects of famine in China on marital behavior of famine affected cohorts in rural areas of Sichuan and Anhui. The reduced form estimates incorporate general equilibrium and heterogeneous treatment effects, two important components of equilibrium marital behavior. Next the paper uses a structural model of the marriage market to decomposed observed marital outcomes into quantity and quality effects. The structural estimates show that the famine reduced the marital attractiveness of the famine-born cohort. The conclusion is that the small observed changes in marriage rates of the famine born cohort are due to a significant decline in marital attractiveness. JEL Classification: J12

A standard assumption in the empirical literature is that exchange rate pass-through is both linear and symmetric. This implies that size (large-versus-small exchange rate changes) and direction (currency appreciations-versus-depreciations) have similar effects. In this paper these assumptions have investigated for Iran's export prices. So, this paper examines the asymmetric exchange rate pass-...

T his study examines how oil price shocks interact with the stock market index within a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag model in Iran. Based on quarterly data for the period from 1991 to 2017, the findings revealed statistically significant evidence of short-run and long-run asymmetric behavior of stock market index in response to the positive a...
متن کاملMarriage Market Implications of the Demographic Transition
We present international evidence on the marriage market implications of cohort size growth, and set out a theoretical model of how marriage markets adjust to imbalances. Since men marry younger women, secular growth in cohort size in the second phase of the demographic transition worsens the position of women. This e¤ect has been substantial in many Asian countries earlier, and continues to be...

In this paper we show how relatively small changes in the age at marriage can equilibrate the marriage market despite relatively large differences in the supply of men and women of marriageable age. In particular, a simple demographic model is developed that provides a prediction about the relationship between relative cohort size and age at marriage that differs markedly from that of the stati...
متن کاملInvestigating the Sustainability of Asian, European and American Regional Gas Markets in Response to Currency and Crude Oil Price Shocks
In this study, we model the long-term and dynamic relationships between spot oil and exchange rates and gas prices by applying the Markov switching vector self-regression model in three regional gas markets in USA, Europe and Asia. Price behavior is analyzed using Bayesian estimation to take into account the transition from an existing relationship and the delayed and recurring effects of pric...
